Overview

Position: UI / UX Designer

Type: Contract with potential for full-time

Location: Fully Remote (work from anywhere but you must have access to a quiet workspace for video calls)

Education: Bachelor's Degree (Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or Visual Art degrees preferred)

About the Position

Your primary responsibility will be to design interfaces and interactions that will feel natural, conventional, and downright fun for users to use. A good product with bad UX is dead in the water, and you are the person that is going to drive products to success through design. You also have some knowledge or desire to learn about the implementation of your designs. We believe that understanding what is possible and how designs will be implemented drives better, more natural design.

You will work alongside engineers and developers in a collaborative environment. You will audit the UI and UX that they implement in the heat of the moment, and hold design reviews to help them grow as well. Your designs and UX flows will also be reviewed by our senior UI/UX designers.

As a UI/UX Designer, you have an exceptional eye for detail and understand the mission-critical nature of good, natural design. You are familiar with the standard tools of the trade: Sketch (or Figma) and the suite of Adobe Creative Cloud tools. You also understand that applications aren’t art to be observed, but tools to be used. As such, you temper beautiful design with high usability and conventional paradigms which will feel normal to users.

You are the kind of person that enjoys working on a team and is capable of managing your own time. We believe that job performance and the number of hours worked are two separate things. Performance is measured by participation with the team and amount of work completed satisfactorily, not how long it took you to do it.

How You Fit

Digital citizen: You are attached to your technology like a sibling. You are constantly using a variety of applications: exposing yourself to and critiquing design and UX paradigms.

Designer first: You have a solid grasp of design fundamentals as they pertain to web and mobile applications and are able to apply that knowledge. You are comfortable wireframing, building mockups, and conducting design reviews of implemented features. This isn’t your first rodeo.

Lifelong learner: You know that this field can change dramatically from week to week. For that reason, you endeavor to keep yourself up to date with new and emerging design and UX patterns, while keeping your skills sharp on the more “stable” skills and tools of the trade.

Completionist: You have a mind for the edge cases and will make sure that you have them all covered in your designs. When you start a task you will work it until it’s done, even if it stops being fun. You are driven to get all of your tasks to “done.”

Systems minded: You are great at taking user stories and audience demographics and developing design systems that appeal to those users while fulfilling the business objective. You think each design through to make sure that it is consistent with the overall design of the application, reusing patterns and components where appropriate.

Well-versed: You are familiar with the standard tools used by designers and remote workers:

  • Communication (Slack, email, Zoom)
  • Design (Sketch/Figma, Adobe Photoshop/XD, etc.)
  • Project Management (Jira) - not required, but a plus

Eagle eye: You have a sharp eye for visual errors. When you are reviewing a feature you can “spot the difference” between the implementation and your provided designs.

No Picasso: Your work looks world-class, don’t get me wrong, but you understand that an application isn’t a work of art sitting in a glass case. Your work is alive and meant to be interacted with, and it is obvious to users how they should do so.

About You

You’re personable — since we are a remote team, your conversational skills are important as they’re really the only way that you’ll get to know the team. You don’t have to love talking, but need to be able to do it well when you do. Sometimes that means having a conversation with a client and explaining your design and UX decisions to them, making concessions where appropriate, and politely standing your ground where it’s important.

You love building user experiences — you don’t have to do it on the weekends and in your free time, but the thought of starting work and solving problems with design excites you. You enjoy getting started on a new problem and finding an elegant and conventional way to solve it.

You understand that you are not your designs— yes, you poured your heart into that design. And sometimes that design sucks, and you know it. But we all have off days, and you understand that the design review process isn’t a personal attack, but a growing experience.

You can zoom out — you can see the big picture. You understand that you may be designing a small component or implementing a small UX workflow, but you can understand how that small feature impacts the system on the whole and the customers who use it.

You can think like a user — Understanding users is without a doubt one of the hardest parts of building applications, but you can change hats and think like a user. This empathy is crucial to solving UI/UX problems in a graceful, forgiving way. We don’t tell users “well, the button was over there and you just couldn’t find it”, we anticipate the user’s expectations and design a product that is pleasant, helpful, and forgiving. You do NOT thrive on being micromanaged and love to be given the freedom to excel in your job — managing your own workday is a dream come true for you.

You are open, direct, and straightforward — you believe that honesty, awareness, and ownership are the direct routes to problem-solving.

You’d rather not play the “blame game,” but instead just correct the issue and keep moving — you are a solution-based thinker who investigates why things went wrong with the goal of improving the process. You believe that a process problem lies at the root of every apparent people problem. Your positive attitude helps keep morale high and the team moving forward.
